In the case of a fire in a building, fire, smoke, and heat are confined to the interior of the premises. The construction of a smoke and ventilation system is a crucial step in the control of a fire. This consists of sweeping the space to be cleared of smoke by a flow of air. This means an evacuation of smoke on one side (smoke extraction duct or high ventilation) and a supply of fresh air on the other (ventilation duct or low ventilation) allowing the rescue services to evacuate people and protect them.
Smoke extraction ducts will protect the premises through which a fire is passed throughout its path, while ventilation ducts will protect the interior volume of a duct from a fire, the usual expression for an “external fire”.
GEOTEC® Smoke and heat extraction ducts are made by juxtaposing 1000 mm long GEOTEC®S fire resistant boards of 30- or 45-mm thickness. These systems are available for fire ratings from EI 60 to EI 120: 1 to 2 hours fire resistance, according to EN 13501-3 and EN 13501-4.
All fire-resistant plates are moulded to standard dimensions with a rebate on all four sides for 45mm thick ducts and on two sides for 30mm thick ducts to facilitate assembly.
GEOTEC® fire ducts can also be made using GEOTEC®SX fire resistant sheets of 1000mm length and 1200mm width for 30mm or 45mm thicknesses. These single size sheets have no longitudinal rabbets for easy cutting and assembly.
